    Kobe 9 Elite

Nike redefines the basketball sneaker with the unveiling of the Kobe 9 Elite shoe yesterday at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles. Kobe Bryant’s ninth signature basketball sneaker was shown in the Masterpiece colorway, and if the silhouette is any indication of future sneakers to come, it seems that the Nike Design team plans to go experimental with their approach. The Kobe 9 Elite shoe was the first to utilize a concoction of Nike’s three established technologies: Flywire, Lunarlon, and Flyknit. Focusing on Nike’s design ethos “Nature Amplified,” the sneaker was designed in an attempt to bring lightweight strength to basketball shoes.

Headlining the event, Mark Parker, President & CEO of Nike, Inc. remarked:

“We are just scratching the surface of the potential of Nike Flyknit to transform the way we design shoes to meet athletes’ needs. The Kobe 9 redefines the basketball shoe by combining power, strength, and flexibility with lightweight materials and a whole new method of manufacturing.”

Eric Avar, Creative Director and VP of innovation for Nike, explained that the Kobe 9 Elite sneaker has been designed with the Nike Flyknit upper to serve as a second skin for the NBA player. The shoe also features an outsole that is specifically designed to mimic the pressure mapping of Kobe’s foot to give it better traction.
